Your Commissioner

Your Police and Crime Commmissioner, Alun Michael, is an elected representative who works to ensure South Wales Police is running effectviely.

Alun Michael became the first Police and Crime Commissioner for South Wales on the 22nd November 2012, and was re-elected for a second term on the 5th May 2016.

The Commissioner's aim is to cut crime and to maintain an effective and efficient police service as well as holding the Chief Constable to account. The Commissioner is the 'voice of the public' and aims to ensure that the policing and safety concerns of our diverse communities are heard and addressed.

Our 'Your Police and Crime Commissioner' leaflet provides a brief overview of the Commissioner's role and the work of our team.

Here you can also find out more information about the Commissioner and his team, the policing priorities that the Commissioner aims to tackle alongside the South Wales Police Chief Constable, and learn more about the partners that the Commissioner and the police work with to help keep South Wales safe.

The future is always uncertain but the following principles will keep us on track as we continue our journey towards an even safer Wales:

  • Preventing crime, supporting safe and confident, resilient communities, is the first responsibility of the police
  • Public services must be innovative and ambitious and shrink together not shrink apart, with a focus on sustainable services
  • Crime trends and root causes must be swiftly identified and addressed
  • The issues faced by our communities need early interventions and prompt, positive action based on evidence and developed in partnership
  • We must work together towards the wellbeing of future generations offering the support people need, when they need it

The full details of the mission, vision, values and principles are available in the full South Wales Police & Crime Plan.
