Today (May 22) marks one year since Kyrees Sullivan and Harvey Evans tragically died in Ely, Cardiff, and our thoughts are with their families, friends and everyone affected.
Statement from Police and Crime Commissioner for South Wales, Emma Wools:
“The tragic event which took place in Ely a year ago left two families grieving for the loss of their loved ones, and the local community in shock. My thoughts continue to be with those families and all those affected.
“There remain significant concerns about the interaction between police and the two boys prior to the collision taking place and understandably, people want and need answers.
“There is an ongoing investigation being carried out by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) which they recently confirmed is nearing completion. I eagerly await their findings and will be able to comment further once they are known.
“My focus is on doing everything we can to ensure that Policing has the trust and confidence of the communities of Caerau and Ely.
“As the newly elected Police and Crime Commissioner, I will ensure that any opportunities to reflect, to learn, and to improve are embraced across the board.
“I hope the people of Ely are encouraged by the collective and unwavering commitment to address some of the issues which have existed, through the delivery of the Caerau and Ely Community Plan announced recently by Welsh Government and Cardiff’s Public Sector Board.
“The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner is part of the Community Steering Group chaired by Jane Hutt MS, Minister for Social Justice, and we will continue to do everything we can to support the successful delivery of the action plan over the next 12 months.
“Once again, my thoughts and condolences continue to be with the families of Kyrees Sullivan and Harvey Evans, their friends, and the wider community.”
