PALG members, who represent a variety of organisations, assist the Commissioner in proactively promoting fair treatment and legitimate practices across the South Wales Police working environment and in dealings with the communities of South Wales. The group provides independent oversight and scrutiny of South Wales Police in respect of:

  • The use of policing powers (including stop search and use of force)
  • The accessibility and transparency of the police conduct and complaints system
  • Policy, project and practice development and implementation
  • Engagement and interaction with the public
  • Fairness at work issues
  • Encouraging diversity in the workplace
  • Progress against equality objectives set as part of the Equality Act Specific Duties.

Meetings take place on a quarterly basis and are chaired by an Independent Community Member.

PALG image 1: Police ACCOUNTABILITY AND LEGITIMACY GROUP Celebrating 2023 palg oversight and Achievements: Following the results of the HMICFRS Vetting and Misogyny Report, PALG were presented a Professional Standards presentation by South Wales Police. South Wales Police answered several queries and made plans to combat corruption. Following the Commissioner’s team conducting a deep dive into the public perception of policing, recommendations were made to South Wales Police to strengthen communication to the public about the work being completed in this area. The Commissioner’s team conducted a Deep Dive into the initial response to domestic abuse. Recommendations were made to South Wales Police to strengthen their mechanisms for involving domestic abuse survivors with officer training and trauma informed practice. PALG provided useful feedback to South Wales Police on Project ATAL and the importance of training for PCSO’s dealing with this. PALG raised points regarding South Wales Police using leaflets/web links and the difficulties for those without access to technology. South Wales Police provided PALG with a brief regarding the initial findings from the first phase of Right Care Right Person. The brief included details on how resources typically used for Concern for Welfare incidents are expected to be redistributed.
