JOB TITLE: Violence Prevention Senior Policy Officer

GRADE:  PO3 £45,147 – £48,894

BASED AT: The Police and Crime Commissioner’s Office at South Wales Police Headquarters in Bridgend.

HOURS: 37

TENURE: 12 Months Fixed Term (Funded by the VPU 25/26 Grant)

VETTING: MV/SC

The South Wales Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) is seeking a Senior Policy Officer to support the Violence Prevention Unit (VPU) in embedding a whole-system, public health approach to violence prevention across South Wales. This is an exciting opportunity to help shape policy, influence practice, and drive meaningful change to reduce violence—particularly that affecting children and young people.

The postholder will support the delivery of the South Wales VPU Delivery Plan and the South Wales Police, Crime and Justice Plan 2025–2029, translating strategic priorities into practical, evidence-informed action. Working across portfolios such as violence prevention, criminal justice, early intervention, vulnerability, and safeguarding, the role will ensure policy is grounded in the lived experiences of those most affected by harm.

They will play a key role in implementing the Serious Violence Duty through local violence boards, supporting improved multi-agency coordination and system leadership. The postholder will also lead on piloting the UK Government’s Young Futures Prevention Partnership (YFPP) model in South Wales, contributing to the development of national guidance and championing early, preventative support for children and young people at risk.

This role involves close collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders, including South Wales Police, Public Health Wales, local authorities, third sector organisations, and youth voice partners. The postholder will also support the development of a new South Wales Crime Prevention and Violence Reduction Strategy, ensuring strong governance and strategic alignment across the region.

In addition, the Senior Policy Officer will work alongside VPU-funded interventions to ensure they are impactful, evidence-based, and embedded within local systems. Working closely with the VPU Data and Insight Officer, they will help ensure that insight is translated into action that informs commissioning, delivery, and strategic decision-making.

The successful candidate will have experience in policy development, partnership working, and strategic delivery. A strong understanding of violence prevention, public health principles, and the Welsh partnership landscape is essential. They will be proactive, dynamic, and politically astute, with excellent communication skills and a commitment to equity, lived experience, and long-term change.

This is a high-impact opportunity to influence how South Wales responds to serious violence and exploitation—ensuring time, money, and resources are focused on the things that prevent harm before it happens.

The post is based in South Wales, with agile and flexible working arrangements in place.
