The Commissioner spent time in Rhondda this week as part of her dedicated ‘In Your Community’ days.
The day began with the Commissioner meeting a local Councillor who was eager to highlight the positive initiatives being led by community representatives to enhance services within their community. The Commissioner was delighted to be shown around Penywaun Primary School by pupils & the Headteacher, who showcased the amazing work taking place to support and empower learners. The visit provided a deeper understanding of the challenges facing the area and was encouraged to learn about the significant efforts underway to strengthen student support and wellbeing.
Next, she visited Hwb Cana, a dedicated hub for residents to access financial and wellbeing support, as well opportunities to develop new skills. The centre plays a vital role in strengthening the community, providing essential support, helping local people thrive and is making a real difference to communities every day.
The Commissioner then met with staff at Cambrian Village Trust and was inspired to hear about the impactful work being delivered. Through a wide range of programmes, the Trust delivers a wide range of impactful programmes and alternative education programmes, with a real passion for making a difference.
The day concluded with a visit to Ferndale Youth Club, thanking young people who helped shaped the Commissioner’s ‘Safe, Heard, Respected’ Plan for Children and Young People. By sharing their experiences and feedback, young people have played a vital role in shaping the Plan priorities and actions, which plays a key role in holding services to account.
