Visible policing making a difference: Commissioner sees impact first‑hand in Merthyr town centre

The Police and Crime Commissioner recently spent time in Merthyr Tydfil Town Centre to hear directly from the people who live and work there about how a more ‘visible, connected and community focused’ policing approach is improving everyday safety and wellbeing.

Police and partners have been working closely together to prioritise community‑led solutions, high‑visibility patrols, and positive engagement designed to make the town centre feel safer and more welcoming for everyone.

During the visit, the Commissioner met with the Local Neighbourhood Policing Team to observe how their targeted, place‑based policing model is helping to reduce crime and anti‑social behaviour (ASB) in key town‑centre hotspots. Officers shared examples of how regular foot patrols, conversations with residents, and dedicated problem‑solving activity are helping people feel more confident and supported in the town centre.

A visit to the CCTV control room showcased how partnership is strengthening community safety. Staff explained how real time communication between CCTV operators, police officers and local partners is helping to keep vulnerable people safe, support shopworkers and identify those causing harm, including offenders illegally using Suron bikes. The coordinated response has already led to multiple positive outcomes for the community.

The Commissioner also took time to speak with local shopworkers, who described instances of verbal and physical abuse that had contributed to feelings of anxiety and vulnerability in the workplace. However, they also described a clear and positive shift, with officers now regularly stopping by, checking in, and building trusted relationships. As a result, shopworkers have noticed a reduction in attempted thefts, threatening behaviour, and anti‑social incidents.

Police & Crime Commissioner, Emma Wools Said:

“As part of my Police, Crime and Justice Plan, I’ve committed to working closely with South Wales Police, local businesses, and community safety partners to deliver safer communities for residents across South Wales. It has been a pleasure to see how targeted, place‑based approaches, combined with a genuine commitment to working together, are helping to build a safer and more welcoming town centre.”

This policing model and partnership‑led approach will remain central to ongoing efforts to strengthen safety and wellbeing across Merthyr Tydfil.
