The Commissioner recently visited Merthyr Tydfil to acknowledge the excellent practice taking place between South Wales Police Cwm Taf Youth Justice Officers and Cwm Taf Youth Justice Service who are collaboratively leading the way locally on the use of Outcome 22 for children and young people (under 18) when issuing out of court resolutions.
This outcome, established in 2019, aims to increase trust and confidence in policing, particularly within ethnically diverse communities, and address the underlying causes of behaviours to divert children and young people away from the criminal justice system, without criminalising them. By taking a child-first approach, children and young people who receive this outcome are provided with tailored support, interventions and diversionary activities to reduce further offences happening in our communities.
The use of this outcome, combined with early intervention and prevention support, has led to an 80% reduction of children and young people committing further offences across Merthyr and Rhondda Cynon Taf.
Cwm Taf Youth Justice Service are also delivering sector leading practice around their commitment to anti-racism and fostering safe and inclusive communities across the region. They have dedicated Anti-Racist Champions offering support to children and young people from ethnic diverse backgrounds, as well as tailored interventions to address harmful behaviours and beliefs to build cohesive communities that celebrate diversity.
The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for South Wales has been instrumental in sharing this excellent practice across the region to support policing and partners deliver consistent, child-first outcomes for children and young people.
It was an inspirational visit highlighting the dedication and collaboration of policing and partners to truly deliver the best outcomes for children, victims and our communities.
