About Mitch Theaker
Mitch’s career has spanned local government, national politics, and international diplomacy. At the age of 21, Mitch was elected as a Councillor for the City and County of Swansea.
Later appointed as a Cabinet Member in Swansea Council, he led on youth offending, tackling poverty and championed early intervention and restorative justice. Mitch helped to set up a food bank, introduced the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) into Council policy and led a successful campaign against payday lenders.
As a Special Adviser to the First Minister of Wales, Mark Drakeford, Mitch worked on a number of policy areas including supporting the creation of the Violence Against Women, Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence (VAWDASV) Blueprint, protecting the most vulnerable during Covid-19, supporting Valleys communities during flooding, and the Welsh Government’s Welcome Centre programme for Ukrainian refugees. Most recently, Mitch served as a diplomat in India leading efforts to promote trade and investment for Wales, building strategic partnerships and representing Wales on the global stage.
Coming from a family with a proud tradition of public service, Mitch’s parents served as Police Officers and has family members currently serving in the Met. Mitch brings both professional experience and a personal understanding of the importance of justice, fairness, and trust in policing.
Mitch is a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community and as Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner for South Wales and will work to deliver the PCC’s Police, Crime and Justice Plan, strengthening community confidence, support for victims, and creating the safe, just and inclusive South Wales we all want to see.
