Recently, the Police and Crime Commissioner visited Cardiff as part of her latest In Your Community Day, spending time with residents, volunteers and neighbourhood policing teams to see first-hand how local investment and partnership working are making a real difference.
The day began in Butetown, where the Commissioner joined neighbourhood officers on a walkabout, hearing directly about the impact of place-based investment delivered through the Winter of Action. During December and January, this targeted approach provided more than 1,600 hours of additional high-visibility patrols across hotspot areas in Cardiff Bay. Alongside this, the Commissioner provided funding to support extended weekend patrols outside the Huggard Centre, helping staff and officers respond more effectively to antisocial behaviour and medical emergencies.
Further investment has also supported a full-time warden in the Loudon Square and Nelson House area of Butetown. Working daily within the community, this role enables issues to be addressed quickly and ensures concerns raised by residents are responded to promptly. These initiatives highlight the difference that can be made when resources are targeted effectively, issues are addressed early, and partners work collaboratively to prevent harm and enhance quality of life.
The visit concluded in Cathays, where the Commissioner met with volunteers and young people at Dar Ul Isra Mosque. This provided a valuable opportunity to listen and learn, gain deeper insight into the experiences of our Muslim community, and consider how positive relationships can continue to be strengthened through open engagement and partnership working.
The Commissioner’s engagement with communities will continue as her Safer Places Partnership Fund develops, building on what is already working well and directing investment towards initiatives that can make the greatest impact on community safety and confidence.
