Place-based Policing – August

Through the Strategic Leadership of the South Wales Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner via the Violence Prevention and Reduction Unit (VPRU) and South Wales Police, communities across South Wales have continued to benefit from place-based policing patrols, proactive policing and partner activity in towns, cities and local communities.

Place-based Policing is South Wales Police’s approach to using data driven, place-based policing and problem-solving techniques to target activity within 35 data-led areas of focus across the force area.

Working closely with partners, businesses and residents, officers are working to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour (ASB), improving community confidence and helping to make South Wales a safer place to live, work and visit.

Through 2,131 policing patrol hours during August, South Wales Police delivered:

• 1,490 engagements
• 83 anti-social behaviour referrals
• 61 arrests
• 47 stop searches

These results demonstrate the positive impact of increased police visibility and targeted enforcement activity, helping to address local concerns, support businesses and create safer public spaces across South Wales.

Place-based policing is a proactive approach that concentrates policing efforts within specific communities and locations where data and local intelligence identify the greatest need. Through increased visibility, community engagement, problem-solving and targeted enforcement activity, officers work alongside partners and residents to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour, address the issues that matter most to local people and to help make communities safer and more resilient.

This work is complemented by the Police and Crime Commissioner’s £1M Safer Places Partnership Fund which is enhancing activity in areas of focus by enabling partners to deliver targeted interventions that make a positive difference to communities. Through the Safer Places Partnership Fund, the Police and Crime Commissioner is supporting projects and services that will strengthen whole-system responses in places experiencing complex challenges, whilst helping to create sustainable, long-term impact beyond the lifetime of the grant.
