Statement from Police & Crime Commissioner, Emma Wools on recent disorder

Following the tragic events in Southport and subsequent scenes of violent disorder, racism and islamophobia across England & NI, as the Police and Crime Commissioner for South Wales, I want to assure the public that comprehensive measures are in place to protect our communities. Our police force is working diligently to monitor, respond to, and ensure the safety of all residents in the face of any potential threats. We are committed to upholding peace, order, and the well-being of our diverse communities. Your safety and security remain top priority.

I am in regular contact with the Chief Constable, Jeremy Vaughan and his team monitoring developments. I am confident South Wales Police are well prepared for any potential disorder and will do everything possible to keep us safe and they have my full support at this time. South Wales Police are taking actions such as increasing police presence, monitoring and intelligence gathering, ensuring public safety, and working with community groups to address concerns about recent events.

I am aware of the real concerns and worries within the communities of South Wales, which prides itself on its diversity, may feel threatened at this time. These are concerns that I understand, and we are working closely with community leaders and stakeholders, including those from Black, Asian and Ethnic minority communities, across South Wales to help address them. Everyone deserves to feel safe and respected in our communities, and I condemn any acts of discrimination, intolerance or hate, including online. I am committed to promoting diversity, inclusion and unity and will work tirelessly with the Police, partners and the public of South Wales to ensure the safety and well-being of all.

We would encourage anyone who witnesses or have any concerns about any hate crime or other criminal activity including online crimes always call 999 or 101 immediately, or report via Publicservicecentre@south-wales.pnn.police.uk
