Main Responsibilities

Hannah is responsible for progressing the Commissioner’s equality and inclusion priorities, and for promoting equality – including Welsh language – across the Commissioner’s functions.  She also oversees the Commissioner’s scrutiny programme, ensuring South Wales Police is effectively held to account through evidence-based oversight informed by the voices of communities and partners.

Responsibilities include:

  • Leading statutory responsibility in relation to equality and Welsh language, and promoting fairness and inclusion throughout the Commissioner’s activities
  • Delivering the Commissioner’s strategic scrutiny programme by conducting scrutiny reviews of thematic areas in South Wales Police, making evidence-based conclusions.
  • Oversight of force inspection progress in relation to recommendations made by His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary, Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS).
  • Promoting accountability and legitimacy of policing by coordinating the Police Accountability & Legitimacy Group (PALG) activity, ensuring partners and community members are included in the oversight and challenge of South Wales Police.
  • Coordinating the All-Wales Independent Oversight & Advisory Panel activity to ensure racially minoritised people across Wales can hold criminal justice to account on progress towards antiracism.

Police Accountability and Legitimacy Group

This group enables external organisations and independent community members to act as critical friends to South Wales Police, supporting the Police & Crime Commissioner in her scrutiny role, and ensuring that South Wales Police is accountable, transparent and legitimate.
