A Look Back at the Safer Streets Summer Initiative

Back in June, Police and Crime Commissioner, Emma Wools, launched the Safer Streets Summer Initiative – a crime and antisocial behaviour prevention initiative in town centres across South Wales during the summer months.

Commissioned by the Home Secretary and backed by the Home Office’s Hotspot Action Fund, the Commissioner developed a deliver plan of targeted police enforcement programmes and partnership activity aligned with priorities within the Police, Crime and Justice Plan.

Between June and September, the Commissioner has visited hotspot areas and town centres across South Wales to meet with partners, speak with residents and businesses and gain an understanding of the impact of this initiative in local communities.

The Commissioner said:

“Everyone deserves to feel safe in their communities and in their town centres. Over the last few months, I have witnessed the Safer Streets Summer Initiative bringing partners together to deliver initiatives restoring faith in community policing and security in local communities.”

Throughout the summer, Safer Streets Summer Initiative funding has supported the delivery of a targeted place-based approach to reducing crime and anti-social behaviour in our towns and cities via:

  • Youth outreach and early intervention activities
  • Increased police visibility and presence
  • Improved safety infrastructure and safeguarding
  • Dedicated retail engagement

The Commissioner added:

The importance of preventative partnership working has been highlighted in the impact already made over the course of the summer. Tackling the root causes of crime, and supporting local communities is essential in working made towards making a safe, just and inclusive South Wales”
