Six children in custody cases were dip sampled by the South Wales Police and Crime Commissioner’s Team for scrutiny by the panel. The cases reviewed reflected a range of genders, ages, ethnicities and custody suites, and included children who had spent varying lengths of time in custody. The sample also considered other relevant factors, such as whether force had been used.

Panel members reviewed each case in detail, discussing their observations, identifying examples of positive practice, and highlighting areas for improvements. Observations, themes and issues identified are being actioned and monitored as appropriate including issues discussed in relation to the Appropriate Adult provision for children. The panel also highlighted the importance of capturing and including the child’s voice in future panel meetings to better understand their experiences. The Commissioner’s Team are exploring how this can be improved for future panels.
